Care is more than
a profession.

Raised in a working-class family in Gate City, Gary went on to study at Virginia Tech and the Medical College of Virginia. He built his medical career in Southside Virginia, founded Cardiology Consultants of Danville, and helped bring the region’s first open-heart bypass program to Southside.

His work as a doctor gave him a close view of the pressures families face, from illness and job loss to the cost of everyday life.

Why he first ran

A patient who needed opportunity.

A 55-year-old patient had spent 30 years working at Dan River Mills. When his job disappeared, he feared he was too young to retire and too old to start over.

Gary could treat his medical conditions. What the man needed most was a chance to work again. That conversation stayed with him and helped inspire his first run for Danville City Council.

Serving through change.

Since joining Council in 2008, Gary has helped guide Danville through a period of economic change. His service has included two terms as Vice Mayor and work on downtown revitalization, public safety facilities, schools, parks, and community spaces.

He knows the city’s progress is real. He also knows it must mean something for renters, retirees, working families, and people still waiting for opportunity.

A neighbor, too.

Outside medicine and public service, Gary has been a soccer coach, a small-business owner, and an aspiring dancer. He and his wife, Karen, a retired educator, share a commitment to the community and its young people.

For Gary, leadership starts with listening, treating people with respect, and showing up for the work.
